Scalp Microbiome: The Invisible Ecosystem

Several factors must be considered before selecting products for clients. Beneath the scalp, an extensive community of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms exists in a dynamic balance. (Scalp Microbiome Composition in Young Women: Associations with Scalp Type, Sensitivity, and Lifestyle Factors, 2026) This scalp microbiome forms the foundation for all hair-related decisions.

Hair growth extends beyond the follicle itself. It is influenced by the broader scalp environment, which either thrives or struggles depending on the balance of microscopic life. Although these microorganisms are not visible, their effects are evident in hair health.

What is the Scalp Microbiome

The scalp microbiome comprises a diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that inhabit the skin of the head. Although the presence of these microorganisms may initially appear concerning, they are essential for maintaining hair health. This microbial ecosystem supports the function of sebaceous glands located at the base of hair follicles and helps maintain the scalp's pH at a slightly acidic level of approximately 5.5. Why It Matters

The scalp microbiome plays a critical role in the study of Black hair due to unique challenges in sebum distribution that directly affect microbiome balance. Sebum is intended to gradually travel along spiral curl patterns. Commonly, the scalp exhibits oversaturation of sebum at the roots or a deficiency of protective oils along the hair shaft, which increases the vulnerability of the scalp ecosystem. A balanced microbiome protects the hair, whereas disruption of this balance compromises scalp and hair health.

Immune Protection

The scalp microbiome serves as the primary defense against fungal and bacterial infections. (Yu et al., 2025) Disruption of this barrier, due to exposure to harsh sulfates, frequent changes in hair products, or stress, can facilitate opportunistic infections. (Carullo, 2021) Consequently, individuals may experience dandruff, itching, or hair loss. This issue extends beyond product-related concerns and represents a collapse of the scalp microbiome.

Lipid Regulation

Sebum production is regulated by the microbiome, and an imbalance in this system can accelerate or degrade oil secretion, ultimately leading to inflammation. (Mosca et al., 2025) Within the context of Black hair science, such imbalances are particularly detrimental and must be addressed. (Ma et al., 2019, pp. 922–928) A disrupted microbiome fails to process sebum efficiently, resulting in scalp buildup, inflammation, and follicular dysfunction.

This ecosystem prevents transepidermal water loss, thereby ensuring that the scalp remains hydrated and flexible. Microbiome Degradation

  • Pollution: Environmental particles clog pores and increase oxidative stress
  • Frequent product switching: Changing shampoos or using home remedies disrupts the microbiome and compromises its protective function

Scalp Health is the Foundation of Healthy Hair

Her Texture requires a clean, flexible, and healthy environment to support optimal hair growth. A balanced scalp microbiome promotes strong, resilient hair by maintaining favorable bacterial and fungal conditions. However, harsh products, chemical buildup, inflammation, or inadequate hair care can disrupt the scalp, leading to fragility, breakage, and limited growth.

If a client has a dry, inflamed scalp, applying protein treatments to the lengths and ends will not help Her Texture thrive. Healthy hair growth depends on the condition of the scalp, so scalp care is essential in any damage-recovery protocol.

Identifying Scalp Conditions

Healthy Scalp Indicators

  • Scalp appears clean, without visible flaking or buildup
  • No visible inflammation, redness, or irritation
  • Client reports no itching, tenderness, or discomfort
  • Scalp feels balanced (not overly oily or dry)
  • No visible lesions, bumps, or unusual growths
  • Hair grows evenly from scalp without noticeable thin or bald patches

Dry Scalp Indicators

  • Visible flaking (white or gray specks on scalp and hair)
  • Scalp appears tight or taut
  • Client reports itching or tightness
  • Hair feels dry at the roots
  • May have increased breakage (dry scalp = dry hair = weakened fiber)
  • Flaking is typically small, fine particles

Oily Scalp Indicators

  • Scalp appears shiny or wet-looking even after washing
  • Buildup visible on scalp (white, yellowish, or grayish)
  • Client reports hair gets greasy quickly after washing
  • May have clogged follicles (buildup prevents hair growth)
  • Hair may feel limp or lack volume at the roots

Inflamed Scalp Indicators

  • Redness or pink discoloration of scalp
  • Client reports tenderness, pain, or a burning sensation
  • Swelling may be visible (scalp appears puffy)
  • May have pustules or lesions
  • Client may report difficulty wearing tight styles due to sensitivity
  • Hair may shed more than normal (inflammation compromises follicle health)

Dandruff / Seborrheic Indicators

  • Visible flaking similar to dry scalp, but often accompanied by itching
  • Flakes may be larger and oilier than dry scalp flakes (yellowish or greasy-looking)
  • Scalp may appear red or irritated underneath flakes
  • Condition may worsen with stress or hormonal changes
  • Client reports persistent itching

Folliculitis Indicators

  • Visible bumps, pustules, or red inflamed spots on scalp
  • Client reports pain, tenderness, or burning at the follicles
  • May have oozing or drainage from affected areas
  • Often accompanied by itching or soreness
